My Most Memorable Travel Escapade of 2011 Part 1

Last year I took a long vacation to one of the lesser-known wine producing regions of California.

Most people know that Napa Valley and Sonoma are the wine producing regions of California, but just slightly further north is Lake County. The region is primarily comprised of the mountains and valleys surrounding Clear Lake, California’s largest fresh water lake. The volcanic soil, pacific ocean breezes, mild temperatures, long growing season, available water, and perfect humidity combine to make for some of the best wine-growing conditions in the world. There are wineries in nearly every city surrounding the lake, and most of them have tastings available – some are even free! We had an opportunity to sample many of the finest wines in the world just a short walk away from where the grapes were grown. The weather was fantastic, and the wines, of course, were excellent. Here are some shots of Lake County.

After a few days in Lake County, we went to Mendocino, California on the coast. But that’s for the next installment.

Sorry. I failed to put the location in the title. This was Lake County, California.
