Olympic Village of Munich

2009-06-01 9

The “Olympiadorf” (or “Olydorf” like the people living there like to call it) is the Olympic village built for the Olympic games 1972 in Munich.

The architects who built this place (many german architects from Stuttgart and Munich worked together to built up this huge project) had in mind a real “ideal” city, living on it’s own in a very futuristic 70’s mood. Great buildings of 20 floors form the external limits of the area, but inside of it you find smaller buildings and even little houses with a few appartments in the center of the area (they were originally the “womens village” separated from the “Men’s village” in the giant buildings). In the surface, you have only pedestrian zone, and the different directions are shown with giant color-tubes to follow in different directions.

The cars, parking and the streets are in the underground, so they never are to seen on the surface. And what’s surprising, is that the “village” is a real community, with a lot of shops, restaurants, bars and many cultural and sport activities. So the place, who looks a little bit strange (frightening?) from outside, is really alive and rich in the inside.

What really impresses me is how this architectural project really constructed a living place and how it is still, 30 years after, a real dynamic living place, a little bit out of the real center of Munich, but a real different city in the city! (And very near of the Olympiadorf, is also the brand new “BMW Welt” with an impressive architecture too. And the Olympiapark with all the sports installations is a great place to visit as well… but this will be another location… ;))

To go there it’s metro U3, station “Olympiadorf”, and the just follow the color-tubes! :)

Interesting to know that the village is still 'living' - great shots.
Just proves that Munich 72 was the best designed Olympics: Otl Aicher's graphics are also classic.

LomoLocations: 'The Lord the Rings' Territory in New Zealand

Hiking in New Zealand has its own proper noun. Great Walks, they call it. The term stands for nine routes that can send people panting and oohing over nature. In 2001, another upper-case name sealed the country’s reputation for pristine land. "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" became an accidental advertisement for the green wonders of New Zealand.

    Janne Parviainen: Light Magician

Janne Parviainen is a 35-year-old artist from Helsinki, Finland. He is both a painter and a photographer but sometimes, he swaps his painting tools for light and creates illuminated pieces of art. Abandoned places are his favorite places for shoots because, according to him, "there's so much lived life and stories in abandoned places, they are the lost diaries and photos turned to dust of lives that once bloomed."

Running Away From God: A Rumble with Astronautalis

"The overarching theme is seeing people in adverse conditions take matters into their own hands and still find the energy to go dancing or fall in love or create art," Astronautalis said of his new album. We found that pretty inspiring, so we teamed up with him for a Rumble competition based on that idea.

    Stalking the City: Ricardo Lozano

New York is an infinitely photographable city in spite—or because—of its innate chaos. And even when the medium is film, praised nowadays for the virtue of slowness, the photographer must keep up with the city’s pace. Ricardo Lozano, 35mm photographer and Lomography community member, managed to do it for the series OK Commuter, now a book by A Love Token Press.
