Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield

One of the best places for art in West Yorkshire has to be the magnificent sculpture park near Bretton in Wakefield. I was lucky enough to visit it this week with a few of my cameras.

I have only been to YSP a few times over all my years in Yorkshire, which is disappointing really because whenever I go, I am always in awe of the place. Not only are there some sculptures and art pieces which seem to be somewhat permanent or longer lasting, but there are also displays from world renowned artists that are being showcased for a limited time. This time when I visited, there was a vast amount of different works by Jaume Plensa – the blurb from the website reads:

YSP presents an extraordinary body of new and recent work by renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. Encouraging tactile and sensory exploration, this vibrant exhibition includes a 50-metre curtain of poetry made of suspended steel letters, large illuminated sculptures in the landscape, and engraved gongs that visitors can strike to fill the gallery with sound.”

This was all amazing and I went totally snap-happy as I walked around both the grounds and the indoor art area. There was so much to see that I was hoping to go back before the installation by Plensa moved on but it doesn’t look like I am going to have time now. Fortunately I got plenty of photos the first time around and you can see these below.

Apart from the cost of getting there, or parking if you take your own transport, the park is free of charge to go to. In addition to all the outdoor things there is also a visitor’s centre with some more art inside, plus a gift shop, cafe, and so on.

For more information you can visit the YSP website.
