Time Lapse Video of the Comet 'Lovejoy'

Also nicknamed ‘The Great Christmas Comet of 2011’, Astrophotographer Stéphane Guisard made this time lapse video of the comet ‘Lovejoy’ last December 2011 as it rises above the Andes mountains near Santiago de Chile. Video after the jump…

Discovered while doing a comet survey by Australian astronomer Terry Lovejoy in November 27, 2011, he describes it as “a rapidly moving fuzzy object”. And on December 23, 2011, just before sunrise, Stéphane Guisard set up and shot four different sequences to zoom in on the scene.

Here’s the video:

The video is absolutely mesmerizing. The night sky was full of dots and streams of light, you can also see a couple of shootings stars here and there. Then, the main attraction — comet Lovejoy looking like a big, beautiful light smear, finishing off by disappearing in the sunrise. Trippy.
