Portraits of Photographers

2012-01-02

We seldom see photos of our favorite photographers with the cameras that they use. Here are a few portraits of some photographers, some they took by themselves while others were taken by another photographer.

When we search for photographs of our favorite photographers, we always focus on the subjects that they take. Rarely do we see the photographers as the subjects. Here are some stunning portraits of great photographers.

Dennis Stock, Germaine Krull, Ilse Bing and Lee Friedlander Photos via Vintage Everyday

Dennis Stock
Dennis Stock was a photojournalist and documentary photographer. During his career, he was also able to take photographs of jazz greats, such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. His portrait above was taken by German-American photographer, Andreas Feininger in 1951.

Germaine Krull
Germaine Krull, a photographer and political activist, rose to fame in the late 1920’s in Paris. She was at par with other photographers like Man Ray and Andre Kertesz. The photo above shows her self-portrait with her camera.

Ilse Bing
Ilse Bing is also known as the ‘Queen of Leica’. She was a self-taught photographer and purchased her first Leica back in 1929. Above is a self-portrait taken in 1931.

Lee Friedlander
Lee Friedlander is a photographer who mostly worked with 35mm cameras using black and white film. Like Dennis Stock, he too photographed jazz musicians. His self-portrait above shows him with his camera in front of a mirror.

Martin Munkacsi, Otto Umbehr, Vivian Maier and Willy Ronis Photos via Vintage Everyday

Martin Munkacsi
Martin Munkacsi was a photographer who made his mark in sports photography. He later on moved to fashion photography. His self-portrait above shows him with 2 ladies, most probably his models for a fashion shoot.

Otto Umbehr
Otto Umbehr, also known as Umbo, was a photojournalist. He was known for his dramatic portraits and even opened his own portrait studio. His self-portrait above with his Leica shows his penchant for taking close-up portraits.

Vivian Maier
Vivian Maier was an amateur street photographer who worked as a nanny for 40 years. At that time, she also took about 100,000 street photos. Her work was only discovered 2 years before her death. For her self-portrait, she used mirrors and included her trusty camera in the shot.

Willy Ronis
Willy Ronis was born in Paris in 1910. He got into photography when he was 35 years old and is known as the first French photographer who worked for LIFE magazine. His self-portrait above was taken in 1955.

Cinematographer Michal Dabal on the Petzval Lens

Here’s what happens before we interview a photographer. We gush about the work though we have yet to find out the cameras and processes behind the brilliant composition or the light architecture. And even when they haven’t used a Lomo camera, we feature them anyway. But every once in a while comes a pro who uses one of our premium lenses at work and our fun cameras off-duty. This makes us mighty glad, more so when their images are good and worth sharing. We count cinematographer Michal Dabal's work among them.

Self to the World: The Photography of Leanne Surfleet

A self-portrait may take root in confidence, extreme shyness or alternate bouts of each. Leanne Surfleet goes through this kind of fluctuation when the camera is all eyes. The attraction—as far as we’re concerned—is the mix of uncertainty and a kind of quiet poise. And here and there, a flash of skin that is more a mystery than full-on revelation. Even Surfleet’s portraits of other people have the same hushed invite, as if to say questions are encouraged. There we took our cue.

Inspiring and Daring Women in Contemporary Photography (Part I)

We love a striking photo as much as the next person, but a unique point of view makes us head straight to a feature. Who should the world know more about? Who has rocked our perception of beauty, sexuality and creativity? These questions populate our notepads, and our list of photographers is quite long. For International Women's Day 2016, we whittle the directory down to our current favorites, photographers who resist labels (even the ones we give them) and dare the world to see what they see.
