Although I am usually more likely to take a trip to Eastern Europe, if you are looking for somewhere warm to take a Christmastime vacation, then I recommend Barcelona for sun, beaches, and palm trees galore.
Barcelona, for many international lomographers probably wouldn’t be warmer than their home country during the winter months. For me and my girlfriend however, it was actually 25x hotter than Leeds, England when we visited the week before Christmas 2011. I had never been away during this season before (other than on ski holidays as a child) and it was a very strange feeling indeed. To get off the plane in winter woolies to be greeted by blue skies, warm sunshine, and palm trees was a real treat indeed.
During our 4-day stay in the city we got to do all kinds of outdoor things that just wouldn’t be feasible in the dull English wintertime. We spent hours on the beach, had picnics outside along the sea front, watched buskers outside cafes and bars, took a ride on a cable car up a mountain, watched an outdoor fountain show, and walked around the roof of an arena. Of course, with it being such glorious weather we also found some time to sample a lot of local sangria!
Although at first, I was unsure what it might be like going away at this time of the year, I would now encourage anyone to do the same if they get the opportunity as it was a great chance to see a new place, be warm in winter, and brag to the people back home about how you were able to have a paddle in the sea in December!
