We’ll bid farewell to this year in a few days’ time, so I bet many of us are busy preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations! If you’re planning to hold a retro-themed celebration or simply curious about how people partied the last hours of the year away, we bring you some snapshots from the 1950’s and 1960’s!

In the late 1950’s, LIFE photographers N.R. Farbman and Loomis Dean snapped these interesting photos of people all dressed up and having fun during New Year’s Eve parties in San Francisco and St. Moritz, Switzerland:

Aside from posh hotel celebrations, many also liked having simple yet wacky house parties with friends and family. These photos, originally 35mm Kodachrome slide transparencies, show people all dressed up for a New Year’s Eve Party in 1961, drinking, dancing, and fooling around while waiting for the year to close!
