1+1=3, Encounters

4

A photo exhibition where different aspects of encounters are visualized through the works of three young photographers: Hristina Tasheva, Quinten De Bruyn and Max Pinckers.

We would like to invite you to the opening of our first exhibition, 1+1=3, Encounters. Intimate pictures of interiors, direct encounters and international double exposures are three keywords in this exhibition.

Of course there will be drinks, food and plenty of people to encounter.
We hope to see you all there!

9 -29 May every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 13.00 -19.00

The concept of ‘doubles’ or ‘film-swaps’ is well known within the Lomographic Society International , an online community based around the love for analogue photography, where members have been interacting and engaging in all sorts of international projects in recent years.

For my first film-swap I decided to post a note on my online Lomohome announcing that I would do a film-swap with visitor number 7777 if they were to accept the proposal by leaving a message in my guestbook. It happened to be the wonderful Lamia Haddad from Provo in the USA. Without deciding anything before hand we each shot a roll of film and sent them to each other in order to shoot over each other’s rolls without knowing what has already been exposed onto the film.

The results are double-exposed photos containing elements of two different cultures, different worlds and different ways of seeing. What interests me is the coincidental factor involved in creating these double-exposed, multi-layered frames. Sometimes the two pictures seem to fit so perfectly over each other that you cannot comprehend the luck or coincidence of what emerged out of that little plastic camera loaded with internationally exposed film that has randomly been shot by different photographers.

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.

Speakers' Corner: Interview with Photographer Philip Wolmuth

Having a respectable career photographing social, political and economical matters, Philip Wolmuth is capable of starting a dialogue with the public via his thought-provoking photographs. Going through the collective of images on his latest work, it seems impossible not to be instantly affected by the rawness of the emotions captured within the images. The passion, the anger, the commotion, the rebellion, the fervor, the shouting, the devotion; his work is inebriating. It's as if the images are screaming at you and, for a short while, you are transported to the Speakers' Corner without actually setting foot on that location.
