My 2011 in Analogue: Clicks and Rolls of Fun

Looking back, 2011 is made even more special with analogue magic. With every trip or occasion, moments that ranged from long stretches to mere split-seconds were captured with a Lomographic friend. Let me share with you some highlights of a click-filled year, as I look forward to the next.

I started out 2011 with the hopes to document my family life in a more analogue way.

From top: December 31, 2010. (Fisheye 2 Ektachrome 200)

Early in the year, I dropped off my broken LC-A+ for repair in the Lomography Gallery Store in Sheung Wan. I used my Diana Mini to document my visit to the shop, and in my excitement, I neglected to check if the aperture was set right. Hello washed out photos! But I love them anyway.

(Photos 1-4: Diana Mini + Lomography X-Pro 200; Photo 5: Diana Mini + Kodak Ektachrome 200; Photo 6: SuperSampler + Lomography CN 800) After having fun with the giant LC-A+ at the shop, I went around the city some more and enjoyed the cool and crisp weather.

During this trip, I picked up a new analogue baby—-Charlie The Choco Mini Instax. I realized how truly fun instant photography was. It took me back to the days when my parents snapped photos of me and my siblings with a Polaroid cam.

Around March, I got a big surprise when a photo of mine placed as runner up in the Hard/Hoofd Fake For Real Rumble. Woohoo!

(Fisheye 2 + Agfa CT Precisa) This photo is extra meaningful because it has my daughter in it, with my two nephews who were visiting from New Zealand.

Before I knew it, it was summer. This meant more beach trips, and more chances to practice Lomography Golden Rule #1—to take my camera anywhere I go.

Photos 1-3: My Dirrty Diana F+ everywhere—from a boat, to the ground, to a hot old warehouse; Photo 4: I also got to try out a nameless freebie camera from a pizza place (all these photos were taken using this). It’s been living in a drawer for quite some time.

Then came my birthday. I got a lot of ribbing that my age (33) wasn’t in the calendar anymore, but that’s okay with me, I like my age. Plus, 33 isn’t past the 36-shot mark yet, hehe.

A whirlwind of activities caught me towards mid-year, as I had to do Maid-of-Honor duties for my big sister’s wedding. Of course I couldn’t let Lomo-opportunities go by.

When I took analogue photos of my sister’s big day, I found myself shooting other people for their pre-wedding stuff because they wanted an analogue touch, too.

Then came other shooting jobs outside my day job, and using film to document these activities was such a treat.

Around this time, I got acquainted with film by The Impossible Project, too. After the first click, I knew this wasn’t just going to be a fling. I could’t even bear to dispose of the film cover, which comes with artwork.

The ‘Ber months turned to December. I still can’t believe the year has come to an end, but I’m happy I got to close it with a meaningful analogue event, where I finally got the chance to personally meet other film folks.

It was great to finally put a face to the nicknames! View the photos and leave a shout-out when you find yourself here! :-) (LC-A+ + Lomography 800 CN)
