Escape from the City Without Leaving the City

Sometimes we just need a break from the busyness of our hi-tech, warp-speed life. But where can you go find a place to zone out if you can’t leave the city? Especially when you’re living in a city state like Singapore that has over 5 million people sharing just 704km square (272 sq mi) of space?

For us Singaporeans and foreign visitors in the know, a public place to unwind would be the Toa Payoh Town Park, just one of the 300 national parks that this tiny island offers.

Built in the 1970s and located in one of Singapore’s oldest housing estates, this well maintained 4.8 ha park has much to offer the visitor.

Its facilities include a bicycle parking station, a foot reflexology footpath, a restaurant, plenty of benches, a well-utilized jogging path, a pond with turtles lurking within the waters, sheltered pavilions, and modern toilets.

And for those who want to know the lay of the land, they can climb the Viewing Tower and get a bird’s eye view of the park – if it’s open.

With open, yet personal space being at a premium, this park is a popular place for those seeking a temporary refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life. But no fishing please!

However, feel free to catch 40 winks – just like this guy here.

It’s also a good place to do some people watching – or vice versa.

Or, if you prefer, just sit on a bench and enjoy the moment.

Getting to this park is easy. It is conveniently located across the Toa Payoh Bus Interchange and train station. What’s even better is that entry is free for all.
