Fuji Sensia 400 35mm: A Slide Film You Should Have in Your Bag

Looking for a versatile and reliable slide film? Fuji Sensia 400 35mm is the slide film to use when you know you’re going to be shooting under different lighting conditions. Read on to find out more!

I enjoy looking at how cross-processed slide films can turn out. The richness and the contrast can blow your mind. But with ISO 100 slide films, it can be limiting when the sky turns cloudy and if you don’t want to use a flash. The solution would be to go for a higher ISO slide film like the Fuji Sensia 400.

Having read the reviews and the unique features of this film, I decided to try a roll for myself during a photo walk. I tested the film with my Olympus XA, which has the widest aperture of F2.8.

True enough, the film does emphasize yellow and green colors, which I feel is a good thing when there’s not enough light.

As a high speed film, it does well in freezing action shots like this skateboarder jumping over a safety pillar.

This film is definitely a good choice when shooting in tricky lighting conditions, although this film can be grainy when pushed to perform.

Here’s a hip shot of other skateboarders taking a break in the shade while watching their friend attempt the jump.

I also tried photographing an ice cream vendor positioned in the shade. I was standing about 6 metres away when I took this photo.

What I particularly liked is the way the film was able to bring out the vibrant colors of the decorations in a shopping centre. Though it was still bright outside the building, there wasn’t that much light entering this open space so I had to open the f-stop to F2.8 on my camera to shoot at a shutter speed of 1/30.

As this is the rainy season in Singapore, good available light can disappear fast.

However this film does well to capture those fleeting moments when the light decides to play hide and seek with you. And sometimes, you’ll get colors that you didn’t expect.

Looking at the conditions the photos were taken under, I would say that this is a very versatile slide film. Also, if you do like yellow and green casts in your photos, then this could be a slide film that you should have in your camera bag.

Fuji Sensia 400 35mm yields lovely results no matter how it’s processed. When cross-processed, Fuji shots have huge contrast and a total colour shift towards green & cream, blue, or even pink – depending on your developer. See the whole range of colour slides in our Shop.
