BookEnds: A Charming Secondhand Bookstore

In the charming town of Kailua, Hawaii on the island of Oahu, there is a fantastic bookstore called BookEnds. It’s my absolute favorite store to browse for secondhand books and trinkets – cozy, locally owned, and all for the love of books!

The city of Kailua is almost a foreign land to me since it’s on the other side of the island, with completely different climates, townspeople, customs, and vibes. However, I absolutely love it – the ultra laid-back feel of Kailua is almost intoxicating, as if to tell everyone to slow down, enjoy yourself, and love life. The beaches are one of my favorite parts of Kailua, with sand so fine and soft like the clouds above, and water that’s crystal clear as can be.

Whenever my love and I get to drive out to Kailua, we always make sure to stop by two places, our favorite coffee place called Morning Brew, and the amazing bookstore next door – BookEnds.

BookEnds in the Kailua Shopping Center is huge! It houses numerous collections of books, ranging from children’s books to religious references to a vast amount of novels from across time’s expanse.

Whenever I go there, I always feel like I’m at home – surrounded by so many pieces of work, literature, and friendly people. The bookstore has many secondhand books, which is great to encourage recycling and turning over books for other people to enjoy. Plus, that means that the prices are much lower! What a bonus. It always smells amazing there, like the musky scent that books acquire over the years – I adore this place.

If I ever make it to Hawaii, I probably won't set aside time to go to a bookstore.

@gvelasco, Thank you for your thoughts! And sarcasm? Wasn't sure. But I agree with you, if I was just a visitor there would be many more sights I'd want to see. Lomography's requested location articles include old bookstores and libraries -- hence this.

No sarcasm. Just like you pointed out. I would be a visitor, and unless I had lots of time I'd rather take in the beautiful nature sites. I would love to have enough time to start taking in some of the cool smaller cities, shops, and local hangouts.
