A Naive Diana in the Hands of a Newborn Lomographer

2011-11-23

For a college application, I was asked to write about something that is really important to me. So, I chose one of my analogue cameras, the Diana F+. It is just kind of my experience in an essay format.

When you think about it, everyone discovers a treasure that changes everything. Mine was a camera, an analogue camera. The Diana F+. It was originally marketed in the 1960’s as a toy camera; then Lomography got their hands on it and tinkered a bit, bringing it to its current condition.

Grasping its small plastic body, I had not the slightest idea what I was getting myself into. As with any foreign escapade, I read up on what I may endure. Where was I going? An unknown destination. My means of getting there? It was that small plastic body that I was holding onto. It thrust me into this journey and I have not looked back since. A few years ago, I chose to abandon much of the digital grind. In doing so, I lost my ability to capture the world as we know it. That is where this beautiful treasure came into play.

Like a child, I quickly found myself flying past the directions, only to come to the conclusion that I was in desperate need of them. I had never loaded a roll of film before or adjusted the aperture of a lens; as I swallowed the words up, I found myself in awe of the Diana and her abilities. Ensuing my acquired knowledge, I frantically loaded a roll of film into her ivory body and heard the “click” of her shutter.

As each roll of film captured images, there was an increasing excitement to see how those images would turn out, a powerful feeling that still exists. Because it is an analogue camera, there is no opportunity to view the image until it has been developed; this prevents the deletion of any image, the deletion of a moment in time that you felt was so beautiful that you had to capture it.

Analogue photography is an adventure, an adventure that one needs to be prepared for, which is why I usually have my Diana or another analogue camera with me. So many variables exist in analogue photography, which only strengthens my adoration. You never know how your images will turn out, because, images can leak/overlap, light can seep in, and sometimes, your camera is not on the correct settings for that moment. It is an unpredictable adventure at best, but that is what makes it so priceless.

The Diana F+ is a new twist on the ‘60s classic cult camera. Famous for its dreamy and soft-focused images, the Diana F+ is now packed with extra features such as panorama and pinhole capabilities. Available in our Online Shop.
