Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan

2011-11-23 1

Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” was remarkable for its film clip, which was one of the first music clips ever. This film clip became one of the forerunners of the music clips which belong to every single nowadays.

“Subterranean Homesick Blues” is one of Dylan’s first electric songs. It was released 1965 as a single and became the lead track in the album "Bringing It All Back Home“.

You may have seen the video clip or at least some pictures where Dylan holds up some cue cards with words. These words are phrases of the songtext. Originally, the clip was the opening segment of the film "Don’t Look Back“, a documentary of Dylan’s tour in 1965 by D.A. Pennebaker. The cue cards were written by the singers Donovan, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Neuwirth and Dylan himself.

In the clip, Dylan stands in an alley behind the Savoy Hotel in London, holding the cue cards and flips them as the song plays. Some of the words are wrongly spelled, but this was intentional. In the background, you can see Allen Ginsberg and Bob Neuwirth talking to each other.

For the documentary "Don’t Look Back“, there were inserted these words: “Surfacing Here Soon | Bob Dylan in | Don’t Look Back by D. A. Pennebaker.”

There was also shot two more alternate promotional films. You can see them in the film "Don’t Look Back“.
This popular "Suberranean Homesick Blues“ film clip was imitated several times. Some examples are the film clips "Mope“ by the Bloodhound Gang, "Mediate“ by INXS and “Misfit” by Curiosity Killed the Cat.

    Stalking the City: Ricardo Lozano

New York is an infinitely photographable city in spite—or because—of its innate chaos. And even when the medium is film, praised nowadays for the virtue of slowness, the photographer must keep up with the city’s pace. Ricardo Lozano, 35mm photographer and Lomography community member, managed to do it for the series OK Commuter, now a book by A Love Token Press.
