By the Decade: 1960's Mugshots

Mugshots of criminals were taken as early as the 1870’s. Its purpose is for the authorities to have a record of the offender so that victims can easily identify them. Typically, mugshots have two parts — one front-view and one side-view of the person. Let’s take a look at some mugshots that were taken in the 1960’s.

Samuel Doster, 1962
This mugshot of Samuel Doster was taken in 1962 when he was charged with murder. One Friday night, Samuel Doster used a knife to stab John James two times on his back and once on his shoulder. Both men were brought to the hospital and Samuel Doster was treated for a minor on his thumb. John James however, died of internal bleeding. After learning of John James’ death, Samuel Doster turned himself in to the police. He was found guilty of manslaughter. This was not Samuel Doster’s first criminal record. In the 1940’s, he was also arrested for larceny when he was only 16 years old.

William Thompson, 1960
One evening in 1960, William Thompson and his wife had an argument. As a result, William’s wife got a butter knife and hit William Thompson on the face using the blunt end. Afterwards, his wife went up to bed and slept. William Thompson, heated by the argument, got a hammer and went up to follow his wife to bed. He did not hit his wife as soon as he got in their room. Reports say that he sat for hours holding the hammer, probably contemplating on what he was going to do. After some time, William Thompson approached his sleeping wife and used the hammer to hit her over and over. His wife didn’t die immediately but was unconscious. She was brought to a hospital and died a few days after. William Thompson was charged with murder and was sent to a hospital for insane criminals. He spent the rest of his life there.

Below are more mugshots taken during the 1960’s. Very little is known about the circumstances surrounding the mugshots of these women.
