Puerto Princesa Subterranean National Park (Palawan)

2009-04-07 3

The Underground River is the longest navigable underground river in the world! The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the most important conservation areas in the Philippines.

It was created to protect the impressive cave systems, lush old growth tropical rain forest, interesting wildlife, unspoiled natural beauty of the area and one of the most impressive cave system in the world. Its main focus is 8.2 km. long underground river that flows beneath a spectacular limestone formation before directly emptying into the sea. (website)

It was the second day of our trip in Puerto Princesa, Palawan and this made us very excited to visit the renowned underground river. The travel was about 2 hours from the main city then we boarded a boat in Sabang Beach that took us about 15 minutes to go the the National Park itself. We were lucky that it didn’t rain or else we wont be able to go inside the cave.

My friends and I explored the Underground River for about an hour. We had a tour inside the cave with our “boatman” as our guide. There were interesting rock formations such as vegetables, plants and most of all the cathedral part. This is the highest peak of the cave and above us were rock formations of the Holy Family, of angels and saints. It gave us goosebumps! Too bad it cant be captured because its too far and dark inside.

Within the park we also did some wildlife watching. There were several colorful birds and monkeys playing around the trees. One must start early and preferably equipped with binoculars to see them. Other wildlife seen are the monitor lizards and squirrels.

After the trip, I told myself that I’d definitely go back and bring a lot of friends so they can also see how magnificent the underground river is. It Indeed deserves to be nominated as one of the seven new wonders of nature!

In the hands of those capable wielding it, art can be a powerful weapon. With it, for one, creation of fantastical realms far removed from the one we live in is entirely possible. Through collage making, Eugenia Loli builds such worlds that invite the audience not only to marvel at them but also, and most importantly, to see through the hodgepodge of images to find meaning and formulate interpretations.
