We met Arnaud Martin at the Cannes Film Festival and as a young and promising director, we put a LomoKino in his hands to see what he would come with. We’re sure that you’ll be as surprised and amazed as we were when we first saw his movies on the launch day of the LomoKino…
Name : Arnaud Martin
Please tell us a little about yourself…
Well, my name is Arnaud Martin. I have been shooting a couple of short movies in the past, including a short movie called “Une Journée Au Paradis” (A day in heaven) and lots of very short movies, live or using animation techniques. I am currently working on a length film, and thanks to all these projects, I am now a movie director. You can see a few of my works on www.arnaudmartin.org (I’ll update the website soon, I promise).
How would you describe the LomoKino in 5 words ?
Old school, fundamental, creative, fun, cinéma.
What’s your favorite feature of the LomoKino and why ?
I love the crank ! It obviously reminds me of the old machines used by the frères Lumière, as well as the Edison’ kinetograph, but also this wonderful movie called “Man with a movie camera” directed by Dziga Vertov, which I’m a big fan of.
What LomoKino movie would you most like to shoot ?
This movie camera makes me want to make my childhood dreams come true. This is the perfect camera to shoot a Jurassic Park remake with toys, or epic disaster movies that mix scenes with real actors and scenes with models. If you give me a model of Paris, as the ones you can find at the Musée Carnavalet, I will shoot a remake of Independance Day !
If you could give the LomoKino to one other Director, who would it be ?
Michel Gondry doesn’t need me to give him a LomoKino, he can buy it himself ! If I have children later, I will give them a LomoKino. I’m way too selfish !
Do you have any advice for LomoKino newcomers ?
You should train to turn the crank, and also, you should tie your hair so that it doesn’t wind on the crank, as you would lose a scene and have to reshoot it again. Don’t use the viewfinder too much, use a tripod, and shoot whenever the weather is sunny… But please, never ever forget that if you shoot a movie, you do it because it’s fun to shoot a movie, so… have fun ! hahahahahahah !
