Spanish Singer/Songwriter Russian Red and her Lomo LC-A+ Russia Day

4

A singer and a songwriter, Russian Red from Spain just had a concert in Hong Kong and we were lucky enough to catch her for an interview! Being a lomographer for two years with her beloved LC-A+, she shares with us her analogue journey and her thoughts on Lomography.

Name: Russian Red
Country: Spain
Occupation:: Singer and songwriter
Website(s): russianred.es and myspace

Can you tell us something about yourself?
I am actually going through this period where I’m touring and seeing the world a lot. I’m so happy because I think this is a really good year.

Is this your first time in Hong Kong and Asia?
Yes, it’s the first time here but not in Asia. We visited Taiwan, Beijing and South Korea last June.

Why do you still shoot analogue?
(Enthusiastically she answers) I think the whole thing about photography is the mystery of the whole process -it’s magic how the picture is being materialized inside here on negative films. So for me it totally makes sense to do analogue because its the truth about photography. Also the textures and the colors, the fact that you can get different results when developing the photos in different shops is exciting.

Also I like the fact that I see the pictures for the first time after a week of coming back from a journey —which is what you want to do. If you see the pictures while you’re taking then it totally misses the mystery when you’re back home. You don’t want to look at them anymore because you’ve been looking at them all the time. So I think this is much more interesting. Also, you think twice before you’re taking the picture with this (holding up her LC-A+).

How long have you been using analogue cameras?
I bought my first lomo two years ago (I’d say) because i was going on a short tour in the States for 4 days. I really wanted to take some good pictures with this (LC-A+). I already had a digital camera but I was like ‘no no’ I want to make pictures like the old times. So I bought it and I started learning a lot because its a really good camera. You develop a sense of sight an the composition of the photography.

Could you share us some tips when taking great pictures?
When ever I find a nice landscape, I compose it so it goes in the bottom of the picture then I multi-exposure it to with the same composition by making holding my LC-A+ up-side-down. It creates a sort of a mirror image. I took a picture of the Grand Canyon and it turned out really great. It was one of the best pictures of my life. I was really excited to take the picture to get it developed. I was like “wow, I took that!”

Also if you want a foggy look for your picture then you breathe onto the lens before you take the picture. A friend of mine gave me this tip. :)

Wow, that’s very creative! So how does analogue photography relate to your everyday life as a songwriter and a singer?
Actually the promotional pictures such as the cover and the pictures inside this album has been taken by my camera. Most of them with this LC-A+. I take picture everyday as a part of a recording of my daily happenings, then i put it up on my blog. For me, it’s not a necessity but its part of my life. I also find new ways to take different pictures and be creative. I think this keeps you really awake and its good.

What analogue items do you carry in your bag besides your analogue camera?
Is it analogue to carry a notepad in my bag? (She smiles and chuckles.) That’s pretty much it. If there’s anything interesting, I’ll write it down on my notepad.

Thats really analogue because most of the people use iPhones or other electronic devices when doing that. That’s really cool. Well, that pretty much sums up this interview. Thank you very much!
Perfect! Thank you so much!
