Lomography CN 800 Film: THE negative film for street photography?

Street photography is unpredictable. So the last thing you should worry about is whether that roll of film you have chosen for the day (or night) is fast enough for the conditions.

In theory, an ISO 800 rated film should be able to handle anything the street throws at you. But that’s the theory. So I decided to run a roll of Lomography CN800 through my Olympus XA3 and find out for myself if this would be my preferred film for street photography and night time shooting.

I decided to test the film by shooting it indoors; in an open area with lots of shadows; at night; and on a moving vehicle.

My first stop was the national library. There, I snapped a photo of some library patrons reading their books and text messages intently within an in-door exhibit.

I explored the exhibit next and took a couple of photos under a mix of florescent and natural lighting.

Then I checked out the open-air balcony next to the exhibition. This was on the tenth floor.

After this, I went down to the library’s foyer and viewed an ongoing exhibition.

Later that night, I went out for a walk with my Olympus XA3 in hand. One of the interesting things about this little camera is that it won’t fire if there’s not enough light.

But when it does fire, it can produce quite interesting photos. I really need to remember to hold the camera steady as the slowest speed of the XA3 is two seconds.

Here are two photos that surprised me. These were taken at 2 am in the morning. I was surprised at how bright and clear the benches came out. Also, in spite of a weak fluorescent lighting, the photo of the switch room came out pretty clear too!

For comparison purposes, I snapped an outdoor photo on a cloudy day to see how well the film could handle.

The last test was to shoot while I was on a moving vehicle (this is an important test as I tend to shoot rolls of film on a tour bus, train or car.)

Looking at the results of the photos shot under different lighting conditions, I dare to say that this will be my color negative film of choice when I go street shooting in the day or at night!

The Lomography Color Negative 35mm 800 ISO film is a high-speed film designed to bring a burst of vibrant colour, as well as great saturation and contrast, in all lighting conditions! Shoot in bright sunshine, grey days, indoors or at night with a flash. See our selection of Lomography films here.
