Take a glimpse into our resident fashionista and top-secret product developer, Katharina Manchu A.K.A. ka and her Diana Instant Back travails!
In this edition of our Behind-the-Scenes series, we take a look into our stylish multitasker Katharina Machu (ka_) also known as ‘ka’, Kathi is our fine, fine director of the Lomography Fashion Department and the Product Development & Design Team, responsible for those quirky camera accessories and limited editions for everyone’s consumption! Who knows, she might just throw some goodies your way! hint~
First, introduce yourself and what you do for Lomography.
I’m 28 years old, live and work in Vienna, my colleague die_steffi calls me Mr. Katzi although I am Ms Kathi, and I am Division Manager for Product Development & Design for Lomography. Here we are inventing, designing and coordinating production of large products, small products and sometimes also mini products. It includes packaging, accessories, camera customizations, limited editions and other products as camera bags, fashion bags or shirts.
So what’s the scoop on how you ended up working for us?
My first job at Lomography was a student job for testing LC-As and cameras. When someone skillful was needed for assembling a LC-A limited edition, I did it. This way I got to know the product development department and luckily could stay.
Who are your favourite designers? How do they inspire you in your line of work?
My favourite designers are my friends from www.divany.at They remind me that nice things don’t have to be taken too serious. They make furniture, jewelery, architecture, soundscapes, comics, paintings; almost everything apart from fashion. They inspire me because they don’t sleep but take part – figuratively. They always come up with new ideas on their own but also as a group.
If you would have 10 seconds to raid the Lomography stockroom, which items would you be eye-ing for and why?
I would run to the film shelve and load my T-Shirt with Instax and Medium Format Film of all kinds. What more would I need?
Imagine yourself taking a year-long backpacking trip around the world and given only one roll of film to shoot your trip with, which one would you bring?
Though it’s a year long trip I would bring a 120 film to load my Lubitel with Fuji Neopan 400.
Do you have any rituals or unusual quirks to help spike up your creative juices?
Hm – not so unusual I guess. It helps me to think about projects before I fall asleep. It’s the perfect time for processing thoughts and ideas. And second of course communication – I ask other people for help, for their opinion, for their ideas.
What characteristic about the new Diana F+ instant back do you like the most?
I love this “Diana+” look on the pictures, soft and dreamy, a little bit off-color. That’s Diana+ for me.
Hypothetically, You won a contest where you get the perfect cocktail dress as a prize, with a designer of your choice. Who would you commission to do your treat, and why?
I would of course ask our Lomography Fashion Designer Zorana. I trust she knows how to make me a future-rocket-gadgetto cocktail dress that looks nice. And I’m sure she would include some space for extra instant film.
Pick a photo from your Diana Instant Back+ test-drives and create a short story about it.
We always knew that crisp bread tastes nice but who would have ever thought that it flys as well as a frisbee!
Last question – given the opportunity to secretly load three songs to a friend’s music library, which songs would they be?
3 songs to swing your hips to relax:)
- Owusu & Hannibal: Blue jay
- Arthur Russell – Wild Combination: That’s Us
- Oleg Kostrow – The great flashing tracks from Iwona: Ein kleines Bettlerliedchen
Thanks a lot for the insights, Kathi!
Last but definitely not the least, we’ll take you to the far southeast for exclusive scoop on our camera development division manager! Stay tuned!
