After a long week’s work or when your head is bursting with the stresses of modern day living, there’s nothing as wholesome and satisfying as searching the coast for isolation with views to boost. Hookhead is a tiny corner on the south coast of Ireland that will do your heart and mind good. It is a place of desolation, raw beauty and windswept delight.
It is an area where dreams are made and an inner peace found by the simple pleasure of the wildness and nature about.
The lighthouse stands proudly on the rock face and when you gaze out to sea it’s very easy to become romantically steeped in the history of the area. The surrounding rocks are a mass of rock pools and breathtaking walks, there are seals to watch out for and the sunsets alone deserve you and a friend to crack open a beer.
The lighthouse is accompanied by an unobtrusive cafe, excellent toilets and shop. This building is tastefully old and painted to blend in with the lighthouse. You have the option of having a tour of the lighthouse which is supposedly haunted and the spiral staircase will certainly make you dizzy! The area is totally unspoiled, the power of the sea and hidden rocks reminds you mother nature is in charge as she has indeed taken manys a boat to her bed in this very area.
You can spend hours walking the rocks and surrounding clifftops or just simply while the time away sitting on the cliff top overlooking miles of empty bay. Every age can enjoy Hookhead.
This is my home from home.
