Schöntal is a beautiful park in the heart of Aschaffenburg. It’s the perfect place to escape from the city. You can take a walk in the promenade, have a romantic picnic with your lover or visit the playground with your whole family.
In the 15th century, Schöntal was laid out as a zoological garden by the elector of Mainz. Later in 1780, it was rearranged as an English landscape garden. It is a wonderful place to enjoy nature and forget all your sorrows.
You can take a walk on a lot of the different paths along several creeks and ponds where ducks are swimming. One attraction is the ‘Zum Heiligen Grabe’ (Eng:‘To Saint Sepulcher’), the ruins of a burnt church and house of the Beguines, members of a religious community. It sits on a small island in a big pond.
If you have children, you might want to go there because of the big playground. There are climbing frames, a sliding board, table tennis tables, swings, a water-mud-installation, and several figures to play with. I sometimes played there myself when I was young.
There is also an old orangery which was temporarily a cinema. Now there is a restaurant and beer garden where you can go for a beer (or coke for the children) if you get thirsty. Aside from that, there is a cabaret called the Hofgarten-Kabarett, which was inaugurated by German cabaret artist Urban Priol.
If you feel like shopping, you can directly go to the mall ‘City Galerie’ or to the pedestrian zone where many stores are. Additionally, there is a magnolia grove. Unfortunately you cannot admire the blossoms in autumn.
If you ever come to Aschaffenburg, visit Schöntal! I can definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to take a break from the hectic city.
