Turquoise water, majestic cliffs, white sand beaches, hidden lagoons…this is why I fell in love with this place. A small town in the northern tip of the island of Palawan – El Nido.
One of the most memorable birthdays I had was when we went to El Nido. It was quite a ride, 5 hours of traveling, 1 hour of which were rough roads but it’s worth every second once you see the majestic marble cliffs peeking from the trees.
This place is one of the Philippines’ top tourist destinations. You can do a lot of things here like squid fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, cliff climbing. We opted to just book some island hopping tours. For two straight days we went island hopping and did a lot of snorkeling. The views were spectacular. You would easily think you’re in Phuket, Thailand but waaaaay cheaper.
Some of the places we visited were 7 Commandos Island, Simezu Island, Hidden Beach, Secret Beach, Matinloc Island (a heart-shaped island), small lagoon, big lagoon, and Helicopter Island.
My favorite was Matinloc Island. It has its own shrine and a house, unfortunately the owner of the island cannot maintain the place anymore so it is now abandoned. But every May, they hold a procession and fiesta in the island to commemorate the feast day of the shrine’s patron saint. It also has a stunning view from above (don’t forget to wear slippers, the limestone steps are pretty sharp).
