The Magic of Early Cinema – The Execution of Mary Stuart (1895)

The first days of cinema were truly exciting times – Inventors and Directors experimented with the possibilities of film and took them in some amazing directions – In this series of articles, we’ll be showing you some of the most ingenious early cinematic shorts – We can’t wait to see LomoKino movies inspired by these! First up is ‘The Execution of Mary Stuart’, a very clever movie produced by one of the pioneers of cinema, Thomas Edison.

It’s less than half a minute long, but ‘The Execution of Mary Stuart’ packed a real punch when it was first produced. The movie is one of the first (if not THE first) movies to use playful editing for dramatic effect – In the movie, an actress approaches and kneels – There is then a very clever cut in which the actress in replaced by a dummy (it happens around 7-8 seconds into this video) and the dummy is beheaded. This kind of cut shot is familiar to us all nowadays but cinematic innovators such as Edison deserve a lot of credit for discovering its possibilities.

Now we are not in any way encouraging similar movies to be made – But we would love to see this experimental potential of the cut shot utilised in your LomoKino videos!
