Fuji Sensia: The Mystery of the Pink Pictures

There are two things that amazed me in Lomography at first, and still do: multiple exposures and the pink and purple Sensia skies. But my first attempts with this film didn’t come out pink at all. Until one day, I finally solved the mystery.

For those experts in photography that know everything about films, chemicals and emulsions, there is probably no point in reading this review. But maybe even those, at some point, may have asked the question: Why don’t my Sensia pictures come out pink when cross-processed? Well, I did and I believe some people had the same problem.

My first Sensia pictures are lovely, one of my best and even made me win some piggy points, an LC-A+ and a Krab. I really can’t complain about them! They were shoot in bright sunlight and the blues and yellows are amazing. But there is nothing pink in it.

When I shot it in cloudy days or indoors, the shift was huge and most of the pictures came out greenish. I like some, but green is not my favorite color. And still, I see no pink at all.

I got a bit disappointed with the Sensia thing. I continued to envy those pink and purple, dreamy and magical Sensia shots I would see in other lomohomes but I got myself convinced that I just didn’t have the knowledge needed to produce them (maybe it’s the exposure, maybe the process of developing…).

Until the day someone wrote something very simple — the pink Sensia shots are produced by the 100 ISO variant. Could it be right? I browsed through my Sensia albums and I found out that they were all 200 ISO. EUREKA!

So, in my last vacations, I took a Sensia 100 ASA to my secret paradise, an island in the south part of my country. I shoot it in a few hours, most of the time in bright sunlight. I was very excited! Even if the pictures didn’t come out pink, the place is amazing and with all that sun there was no way they would be a disappointment.

Back home I went to the lab with half a dozen films. “This one is 360º panoramic, this is redscale, this is x-pro…”. After I left, I noticed I forgot to mention the Sensia. At that point I was not sure if it was really about the ISO or something in developing… “Well, you’re not going to have the pink shots again, girl…”

The next day at the lab I opened the white envelope… and there were pink, purple, and AMAZING blues in those pictures that would even hurt my eyes! It was one of those lomographic high moments! I’ve uploaded the entire film to my Lomohome because there is not one picture I don’t like!

Most of the pictures were shoot in bright sunlight or at the sunset but two were shoot underwater (by my boyfriend) and one at sunset time but in the shadow. I was advised to shoot underwater with 400 ISO and so I thought that a x-pro 100 ISO would be a total disaster. Who would have guessed, they are much better than the CN 400 ISO! It seems that in lower light conditions, the Sensia pink disappears a little and the oranges pop out, beautiful as well.

No need to say, I’ve already 2 more Sensia 100 at home ready to load! I think I have to know this film a bit better, for what I have seen it shifts a bit and you can’t be sure it always comes out pink… but if I had to choose a favorite film now, Sensia 100 would be it. I know there are tons of Sensia albums here and some people probably got tired of it. But I just can’t get tired of those amazing, dreamy colors that hypnotize me!

Fuji Sensia 100 35mm yields lovely results no matter how it’s processed. When cross-processed, Fuji shots have huge contrast and a total colour shift towards green & cream, blue, or even pink – depending on your developer. See the whole range of colour slides in our Shop.

Forgot to mention: Sensia ISO 200 were shot with the LC-A and the 100 ISO with the LC-A+. I think I also changed the ISO settings on my LC-A+ when shooting the 100 ISO Sensia but can't remember for sure... :) Thanks for your comment @superlighter, I really want to know more about this film!

:D hahaha
