5 Questions on Analogue Photography with James Butler

In this new and on-going series we have selected some of the most enthusiastic film photography fanatics and asked them 5 simple questions that gives us an insight into their passion for all things analogue. We also get to see some of their own photographs. Today, we talk to Layout Artist for Peppa Pig James Butler.

Name: James Butler
Occupation: Layout Artist on Peppa Pig
Country: UK

1. Tell us something about yourself.

I live in small town Hertfordshire, surrounded by trees and windmills and canals. I work in Central London, surrounded by crowds and architecture, street art and neon signs. All of which I try and capture on film.

2. Why do you still shoot analogue?

The main reason is I like the cameras. Old ones like my college-era Pentax K1000, trusty ones like my LCAs and quirky ones like my toy cameras. And then discovering all the fun things you can do with film (xpro, redscale, shooting sprockets).

3. What photographic equipment (cameras, films, and accessories) do you usually have in your bag?

Always have at least a couple of cameras – normally an LCA and something more toy-like. I’m really enjoying my Aryca Actionsampler (aka Underwater Actionsampler) at the moment, like a regular actionsampler but on steroids.

4. Share a trick of yours that will always result to a great photo.

I don’t think there’s any tip that will always result in a great photo….but here’s one: always, always wind on immediately after you shoot. That way you are primed and ready to go if you see something in the street that needs fast reaction. Likewise with the LCA, learn to slam both levers down (focus to infinity, aperture to A) in the same motion as opening the lens cover.

5. Which photographers influence your work?

I’m constantly inspired by seeing photos from around the world on flickr. The great thing about film photography is you can collaborate with people whose work inspires you – you can fire off an email and be shooting a double exposure project the same day.

Thanks, James, for taking the time to answer these questions! Browse more of his pictures on his Flickr.
