When we drove out to the countryside of Northkorea we were asked not too shoot outside the bus window. we did anyway. You see a lot of hard labour on the fields. Narely large machinery, just people working. I reckon it is comparable with a reality in China 30 to 40 years ago...
Going outside of Pyongyang was always was exciting. We were asked not to take shots, of what we saw on the road, but it was just too tempting. I think it is probably comparable to China 30 years ago. Lots of hard labour on the field and a certain degree of poverty. We saw the process of making salt - which In the DPRK is collected in designated salt fields - quite interesting. And I was happy to shoot some happy portraits at the nampo dam at the taedong river...

The local community college near my in laws hosts duck and geese at the pond that enjoy being fed, not having their picture taken by a fool with a Holga.
So we went over to the DMZ, the demilitarized zone of the Korean peninsula - the most dangerous border there is - on the northern side and it was impressive. We had a great soldier guiding us and being open to questions en masse. So I asked him, if he likes his job and how long he thinks this conflict will remain that captivates the world? we stood at the line, that seperates the north from the south, one foot on either side. Later we visited the birth place of Kim il Sung, which is a place of worship for the Northkoreans and filled with much excitement for the visitors...

After eight intense days in Northkorea I was all run out of photographic desire. It took this abandonded cemetery in Gulang Yu to ignite my mojo again. I just couldn't believe thise natiure made ensemble of fallen trees on graves. perfect set up for a commercial or film....

On my travels to Northkorea I had the chance to see a couple of impressive Statues of the Kims. But it's a special thing to go there and photograph them, as they are considered holy sites. So when we passed a double monument near Wonsan, I asked if we can go there. It was a great deal of organisation, as our guides had to ask the local authorities. There are certain rules to photograph them and you only have limited time. But that will be another story.
