Shot of the Year 2011

1

The world of Lomography is still a relativly new discovery to me. My roots being in filmmaking, I’ve well versed in the idea of shooting from the hip, but to just let go all together is something I have only been exposed to in the work of someone like Lars Von Trier.
I have been taught to constantly over think my work. While this has led to a lot of very succesful pieces, it also has brought me to a very difficult part in my life. Almost a year ago exactly my life took a very sharp turn. I was obessed in my own little world of making movies and shooting photos, all the while forgetting who I am and hurting those most dear to me.
It is with no hestitation or pride that I say photography has saved my life. Filmmaking has been put on the backburner while I look at my process in a much more myopic lens.

While photographing these abandoned homes I feel an odd sense of security in surrounding myself in the ‘calm after the storm’ in these once beloved properties. What gets left behind never ceases to amaze me in our plastic-fantastic throw away american culture. These possesions, the property that was once the pride of the family name is left for nature to take its course and hopefully…for more artists to find
