Shave Ice Time!

Most people that visit Oahu, at some point, decide the simply must see the “North Shore”. A lot of summertime tourists often go then find that the legendary big surf happens more in the winter. So they do what any good tourist does; they go shopping. And right there in the north shore of Oahu is the historic town of Haleiwa.

This brings up the very subject of shave ice; or what many people call a snocone. But remember, you are in Hawaii so it is important to call it by its correct name. Shave ice. What is not photographed here is Matsumoto’s Shave Ice. It is a global legend! As such the line is out the door and down the street.

But why be a tourist lemming? I want you to walk just across the the parking lot, past the church, to Aoki’s Shave Ice. Here you will get a real authentic shave ice and it will be just as good, if not better, than the other place. This is where the locals will often go because we know a good thing. Yes, we will also tell tourists by the dozen to go to the other more famous place.

When getting your shave ice there is two things that can make it extra special. First of which is to get the scoop of vanilla ice cream. They put this at the bottom of the cup under the shaved ice. Think of it as a pirates treasure. Second are the azuki beans. These are sweet Japanese beans and are very good. It can be a little strange to eat something the consistency of a bean but sweet. However they are very good on shaved ice.

The only thing I ask is that you tell all the other tourists to go to Matsumoto’s. We have to keep the lines down at Aoki’s.
