  • Quince Blossoms, Part 1

    shared by alienmeatsack on 2017-02-19

One of my favorite things to shoot each Spring is the Quince bush in my back yard (garden). The blossoms are gorgeous and as they bloom they are a wonderful and gorgeous display in my otherwise dreary yard. So I make a point every season to do two sessions with them, one as they just start to bloom and one when they are in full bloom. This is the starting of their blooming, some of the flowers are already opened up and they are just so lovely. I shot these using my #Lomography #LomoInstant #Automat on #FujiFilm #Instax #Mini film, some shots were taken using a #Holga #Closeup #Lens that focuses at around 4.7".

Winter in Minnesota is long and cold. To ensure that people see the sun at least a couple times a week, the city of St. Paul has the annual Winter Carnival. It is an outdoor carnival complete with ice sculptures, ice castles, snow slides, and parades. There is a parade where King Boreus of the North processess down one of the main streets in St. Paul, followed by the troublesome Vulcans, fire spirits who ride around in a vintage fire truck. There is an annual ice carving cometition as well as the "medallion hunt," where a golden medallion is hidden in a snowbank somewhere in the city. The local paper will run clues every day that hint at the locatin of the medallion, and whoever finds it gets a cash prize.

These photos are very special to me - some of the most powerful images I have ever shot, I guess. I had a walk with my family in a park about a year ago and took my camera with me. I took a few black-and-white shots of my niece being herself and enjoying the walk. The cloudy sky required low shutter speeds, so I ended up at 1/30 s, I guess. This caused a very special blurry atmosphere in certain parts of the images, like hands and feet, while others remained still. Since I couldn't always focus properly the photos turned out kind of dynamic and alive. Most of the images were taken from a low angle, which shows the world from the perspective of a child. I really like the results and made prints for my niece and her parents.
