Cameras for a Trip to Miami

Given that we’re traveling cross-continent by air, I have to pack relatively light. My DSLR is a definite. I’ll have my camera phone in my pocket and my tablet. So much for the digital.

I never forget to take my Instax. Too much fun to be had there and it’s nice to take people’s photos and give them the picture. Bringing two packages because of the conference.

Then come the analogs. I am trying to represent both the medium format and the panoramic. If this were a longer trip, I’d bring my La Sardina for playing around with double exposures (it is great for that.) I don’t want a lot of weight, so I am choosing my Sprocket Rocket over the Horizon (besides you never know what airport security is going to do when they see an odd camera) and my Belair over my Bronica (which weighs a ton.)

The big question then is what film?

I have lots and lots of Portra on hand, both in 120 format and 35mm. I love the stuff, but there are alternatives including Kodacolor, Ultramax, X-Pro, Elitechrome, and Redscale. So no final decision here. Advice would be welcome.

I wonder what you would bring for such a trip?

The photo is the beach at Dana Point, California. I haven’t been to Miami yet.

For street photos, do you have some sort of a rangefinder, like a FED or Yashica, and a Lead Bag for films, just in case. Always carry on films, don't check them. Checked luggage gets REALLY irradiated. The carry on x-ray is much gentler, and the lead bag will be enough, if they insist. Last time I flew with cameras, they just unpacked the camera bag, I repacked it without film, they x-rayed the empty cameras and bag, then swabbed and sniffed the films and lead bag. All Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Burbank... "Paranoia strikes deep..."

BTW... Films, Kodak Portra, 160 and 400, and Tri-X are my favorites. For frugality get CVS or Kirkland for color and Arista for B&W.

I will probably mail the films directly to my developer. Price is never a problem for me, @herbert-4. I spoil myself at every opportunity. Oh, I forgot that I had some Ilford XP-2....I am lazy about my black and white developing. ;)

Have a great trip! Look forward to seeing your photographs. I was in New York recently for a week and took my LC-A+ and Olympus 35RC. Hoping to have posted to Lomo home this weekend. Regards

@tsingtao @ksears119 @herbert-4 I took the cameras as described, shooting Portra though I had some other films handy. I thought I had brought some Instax, too, but when I arrived, I had none. Ah well.

They didn't give me much trouble at the airport. They didn't even open my security pouch, but they were very interested -- at LAX -- in the Instax camera which they ran through the machine twice.
