Directions for a New Lomography

Credits: emperornorton

People said “New Flickr” as if it were a disaster on the scale of New Coke. But after letting it settle in for a few days, it didn’t look so bad to most of us. We didn’t lose any features, but we gained a strong new layout that showcased our photos well.

Maybe it is time for a new Lomography. Lomography’s problem isn’t the layout as much as it is a lack of decent features supporting the site. For example, that you can’t reverse a like has long driven me crazy. Sometimes I am just clicking through a file when I “like” a dog. Once done it cannot be undone. And if the purpose of the likes is to help people get a clue as to which photos attract the most interest from people, the present system does not help.

Likewise (no pun intended) not being able to delete comments can be maddening. Some sites handle this by giving you a period of grace in which you can revise or delete the comments — say fifteen minutes. Then it goes in stone. Why not here?

I’d like to see my photos against a black background, personally, so why not go Flickr one better by giving people a choice over the color background they have. Come to think of it, middle gray would be wonderful. Photos seem to float in middle gray.

Finally, Lomography is well overdue for increased server capacity. Have you spent hours going through a few albums? The problem is the computer hosting Please put some money into that please, gods.

Perhaps you have some ideas of your own. Please share them! And if you agree that Lomography needs at least a few tweaks to better the service, like this blog!

I would really love to be able to seach through my own pictures better. The seach fuction is sort of okay in the lab (though far from perfect), but it would be great to seach my own home as well. The lab doesn't provide the ID number you need to use a picture in a blog or article or something, so if I want to link to a particular, older picture, it can take a lot of searching now.

Oh, and after reading your previous blog post, I thought that it would be nice to be able to make your own most popular wall. Sort of like the wall with your recent likes, but with only your own pictures. Does this description make sense? I useually take the same approach you take, and make an album of my personal favorites (for instance, if your´re interested,…), but it would be nice to have a list of favorites permanently visible on your home.

I think the suggestion to be able to reverse a like is good and I really think they should have a better or stronger server hosting the site should be improved. Also, the curating of selects like flickr's explore I think should be better. I don;t know how though.

I agree with you, @emperornorton. The likes/comments features need to be improved. Also, the Lab, THE LAB!!!!. Good lord :( I guess Lomography has a limited amount of resources in terms of server's hardware, but it's frustrating to deal with a slow site and an uploader that's far from friendly. If they could use like the 15% of the extra incomes from their Kickstarters, they could build a better website, with an HTML5 uploader and a better likes and comments systems. They have to adjust to these new times and the increase of users interested in Lomography. The community has grown and so the site should. It's more than necessary.

personally, dunno if it's just me not being smart enough, but I've never been able to add new pictures to an existing album
Sometimes you want to create an album for an ongoing project over several films and few months: say "shadows of things seen", "cats", "people with a fur" "you name it!" and everytime you upload pictures, there might be one or two pix to put in that album... so far it does not seem to me that this option exists... (if indeed it does please forgive and explain :)
but yeah that'd be one thing i'd improve
oh and I second the "personal favorite" idea... one of my pictures got handpicked and thus got many likes... but some of my earlier work which I thought was better, never had the chance to be showcased like that... so i'd like to be able to choose my own favorites... ^^

    great article!

Hi, I guess everyone has their reasons for not liking this site anymore, or they just want a new look, and it's true, we need improvements. Thanks for posting this, if you don't mind @emperornorton, I will re-post it on Tumblr, with credits of course

@ mrmostarr Actually it's possible. You just have to drag the photos you want to add to your album. You must select the photos and the album in the lab. Then you should see in "sélection" both "unsorted photos" and your album.
    Hope I helped you :)

great attempt @emperornorton!! sometimes the onscreen size of the shots could be bigger. suppose most of us upload in a bigger size, so it should be possible

I'm not taking credit for this, but I am grateful for the change. Now for a bit of self-promotion: Check out my latest magazine article at…
