Geylang Serai Hari Raya Bazaar 2016

Every year, Muslims fast through the month of Ramadan. During this month, they will abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset. This is a time of self-discipline and sacrifice to purify the soul and also to remind themselves of those needier than they are. Once sunset falls, they break fast and enjoy a heavy meal. This is where the Geylang Serai Bazaar comes in, a massive market selling all kinds of goods from home decor to clothes and shoes, henna decorations and food, food, food, food. :p The Bazaar in Singapore is open to all so before sunset, you would see quite a number of non-Muslims (like myself) there to buy the food and then as night falls it gets horrendously crowded. The bazaar is responsible for many hefty waistlines during this month due to offerings like salmon burger, rainbow drinks, fried churros with gula melaka (like brown sugar), deep fried squid on sticks, thai iced milk tea and the infamous Ramlee burger (egg, patty, and piles of ketchup and mayo). If you don't see much food in my pictures, that's because I was too busy eating all of them!
