Cabo Vilán/English Cemetery (double expo)

HMS Serpent (1887) was a torpedo cruiser launched in 1887 and wrecked in November 1890 near Camariñas with the loss of 173 of her crew of 176 men. The cause was an error of judgement on the part of those responsible for the ship's navigation. Still, her officers and men obeyed orders and maintained good discipline to the end. The people of Camariñas tried to assist the crew, but they only could salvage the bodies as the sea delivered them to the beach. A cemetery was built near Vilán cape and the bodies of the whole crew were buried there. The cemetery is known as The English Cemetery. For a long time, every time a Royal Navy ship cruised by, they fired their guns to salute their dead comrades.
