A 20mi long dam (Afsluitdijk) constructed in the 1930’s apparently sealed off the water surface that used to act as a light-reflecting mirror. That mirror surface turned dim and dull and could not anymore generate that fabulous light one can still see on the 16th century Dutch paintings. On a sunny beach day like this I think his statement does not hold anymore…
