    Gas masks give me the willies - there's something so ominous about them. Probably because they're humanoid yet somehow dehumanising at the same time, not to mention their historical associations with war and possible nuclear winter. They always make for fascinating images, though, and this one's a great example.

    Thanks - I've always liked using masks and costumes in photographs. This gas mask is a wartime Polish one. It's been used on several shoots and one project was shot entirely around it - but, without fail - every film including it has turned out to be a disaster for one reason or another (light leaks, focus misalignment, accidental multiple exposures). I like to attribute this to some kind of phantom latent radioactivity rather than using disintegrating equipment...
