Street Photography Tips: Use Your Horizon Camera

The Horizon Kompakt and Perfekt may be a bit bulkier than your usual compact cameras, but aside from taking photos of beautiful landscapes, they can also be your partners in taking pictures on the streets. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Take the Horizon with you everywhere you go.

As lomographers, it is but natural to bring our cameras everywhere. The Horizon is no exception. The more often you have it slung around your neck, the more chances you’ll get to capture the street action—and the more you’ll get used to having a slightly bigger camera with you.

Master the controls and settings, especially if you’re using the Horizon Perfekt.

Like with any camera, it’s important that you are familiar with its settings before you use it, or you might end up with over or under exposed images. Once you’ve mastered how it works, you’re entitled to more possibilities.

Don’t just let it sit there. Be creative.

We all know that Horizon cameras take perfect horizontal panoramas. But try shooting vertically, or even tilting your camera. You’ll be surprised at what it can do.

If you do want a perfect horizontal panorama, be mindful of your composition, as some lines might get curved or distorted.

Because of the Horizon’s structure, sometimes only the line near the center of the photo will appear straight.

Try shooting at night.

You’ll discover that the Horizon does great with long exposures, and that these long exposures look awesome on night shots.

Try shooting in color, but as always, black-and-white is a good option when it comes to street photography.

Horizon cameras are known to yield eye-popping colored images. Nevertheless, it goes well with any kind of 35mm film, so you can still opt for the usual black-and-white street photos.

Be mindful of distracting elements that may appear on the side of your frame.

Horizon cameras can cover a wide area with its lens, so be careful of unnecessary elements that might ruin the photo.

Don’t be afraid to get close.

Even if shooting too close might render the object in the foreground slightly out of focus, you might actually produce a photo that will make an interesting background stand out.

Watch that finger.

Make sure that you are holding the camera properly and that your finger is out of the way. You don’t want your fingertips ruining an otherwise perfect photo.
