Fed 5 Rangefinder and Focus Adjustment, DIY Style

Is your Fed 5 camera not focusing correctly? Are your photos not as sharp as you would like them to be? Your camera needs some adjusting. Here's a quick and easy way to do it.

The pink Fed 5b from the pictures is actually my first analogue camera. I bought it for my girlfriend but since she never uses it, i tried it out and got addicted to Lomography instantly! After the pink Fed, I wanted another one with a light meter so I bought a black one. But there was a problem. The pictures from the black Fed were ok but not even close to the sharpness of the photos I took with my other camera.

If you’re having the same problem, here is how you can fix it in few easy steps.

The things you will need:

  • A small pair of pliers
  • A screwdriver
  • Meter tape

Step 1: Vertical rangefinder image adjustment.and infinity focus adjustment

Take the nameplate off but be careful not to lose the spring clip at the “F” side of the Fed nameplate. Now you can see as indicated in the picture, there is one rotating collar and a recessed screw. Use the pliers to adjust the vertical rangefinder image by turning the rotating collar first. Then use the screw driver to adjust the infinity focus. Set your lens to infinity and adjust the camera accordingly.

Step 2: Close focus distance adjustment

Unfortunately, infinity and close distance focus do not always match. If the close distance focus is not correct, you have to adjust it by turning the rangefinder coupler head. Use the pliers and be careful not to break the mechanism. Set the lens to 1m. Use the meter tape and put your subject 1m away. Note that the distance of 1m has to be measured from the plane of your film and not from the lens.

Step 3: Close and infinity focus coupling

Now, all you have to do is readjust the infinity and close focus distance so that both are on the correct settings.

Step 4: Screw the name plate back on

And presto! You just fixed the problem DIY style! Be sure to load a roll of film on your Fed and go shoot in true analogue style!
