Photography Basics: Panning

As the old saying goes, you have to learn to walk before you can run! We'll try to touch on basics of photography, starting with panning!

Panning is one of the tried and tested techniques in photography. But what is it exactly? In a nutshell, panning is the horizontal movement of a camera as it scans a moving subject. The end result is that the whole photo is blurred aside from the subject, denoting movement. This technique is usually used in sports but like all things, have different uses as well.

Here’s a short video on the basics of panning and how to do it properly! The key thing to remember in panning is to follow the subject’s movement and match it’s speed and direction as perfectly as possible. Sounds hard but practice makes perfect!
