Vanity of Vanities: Cosmetics Kit as Camera Bag

While doing some reorganizing and spring cleaning, I decided that one of my make-up train cases would be better suited as a film photography kit. With its Pucci-inspired satin print, I knew it would be a fabulously functional camera bag perfect for my equipment and emulsions!

I was cleaning out my closet a few weeks ago and found make-up bag upon make-up bag full of cosmetics, perfume and toiletries that I’d forgotten about. You know, typical lady problems. I decided to get rid of the old junk and give away the unused gunk and ended up with some chic but empty vanity cases.

Mostly, my analogue goods are properly kept but separately: cameras on shelves and in crates, film rolls in boxes and drawers, accessories in Caboodles and Ziplocs, and miscellaneous supplies split between my room and my office. I thought it would be wise to put together a complete “to-go” camera bag that I can just grab should I go on an impromptu trip or get hired for a spontaneous shoot and a make-up case turned out to be perfect!

The Pucci-esque satin print’s got my seal of stylish approval while the roomy and pink padded insides make it pretty practical. Here are the essentials I’ve stashed in it:

  • Lomo LC-A+ stored in a satin pouch as primary camera
  • Diana Mini Leopard also in a cloth purse as back-up camera
  • White plastic 35mm film case with special/slide emulsions
  • Some rolls of Fujicolor 100 color negative film
  • Camera-shaped notebook for ideas, poetry, reminders and cheat sheets
  • Pens for note-taking and markers for labeling (fits snugly where make-up brushes are supposed to be!)
  • Leopard-print hard case for accessories like Diana Flash+, color gels, adaptors, filters, batteries, etc.

Did I miss anything important that a film photographer should always have handy? For my shooting preference, I think I’ve got all the basic equipment I need. There’s actually still room for one more auto camera but I usually keep that with me or in my daily bag for those moments wherein whipping out a snapshooter is necessary. Now I have a comprehensive yet compact camera bag ready to take on any analogue adventure!
