Ghostly Doubles: Spirited Away!

Double exposure is probably the technique most used by Lomographers. I like images all mixed up but sometimes I like to put some order in the house and tend to work my images so they can be distinct. When I'm up to it, I turn on the Ghost Mode!

It´s kind of my favourite way to make doubles, although I don´t do it often. I think I don´t want to be annoyed with too much ghost mode photos. For those who are new to this Lomo-world, the ghostly doubles refer to photos in which you find persons (or animals, or aliens, whatever) which are crossed by the background of the picture as we could see trough those persons.

Well, let´s see what I do.
Usually I only use the ghost mode with persons. Why? It´s easier for us to keep them where we want (well, most of them I think). My next challenge will be with animals… or not!

1. Grab a camera that has the ability to make doubles instantly. LC-A+, Diana F+, Sprocket Rocket, Yashica D… they´re all welcome.

2. Choose your background. The sea, the hills, the forests, grass, buildings… a brick wall! Something minimally illuminated so you can see well all the background in the end of the photo.

3. Then you´ll choose to use the tripod or not. I never do! With the tripod you can do a perfect Ghost double… but Lomography isn’t about perfection. So, I don´t use my tripod but that doesn’t mean that I’m not careful.

4. Back to the background. Choose which part of it you want it to stay at the photo, put it on your viewfinder and center it.

5. Now enters your model. Guide him/her so he stays at the right corner first. Take a shot. Now, try not to move or move only a little bit while pressing the MX button or breeding. Guide your model again, this time to the left corner. And shoot!

That´s it! A nice ghost double is done.
When not using the tripod, the trick is to memorize your background on the viewer.
When you have no model, you can always try flash ghost doubles with yourself.
