Creative Corner: Film Flash Drive

13

Need a place to store your beloved, scanned lomographs? Here’s a creative way to spice up your memory drive with some analogue love! Read more about how to make your own after the jump.

Things have been quite hectic for me due to moving into a new house and starting up my senior year in high school (Hopefully that will be an adequate reason for my low amounts of uploads and few articles…). Anyway, this little project helps keep me organized and such with everything going on.

To make your own, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Two empty film cartridges
  • A small flash drive
  • Scissors
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • You will also need something to wrap the flash drive in (I used undeveloped film, but you can use anything, really)

1. Take the cartridge that you DON’T want to use for your film drive and pop off the top using the screw driver. Try not to bend the cover piece as much as possible because you will need to use it later on.

2. Remove the bottom cover of the cartridge that you DO want to use, carefully, with pliers. All the inner pieces should fall out, leaving you a nice empty top.

3. Next, use the pliers to make room for the usb drive to fit through the top of the cartridge that you DO want to use.

(My pliers were thin and sort of made it hard to make an even hole…)

4. Cut the film out of the cartridge and wrap the flash drive, or whatever it is you decide to use (a long strip of paper works well too).

5. Push the wrapped drive into the cartridge with the hole in the top, hopefully it’s snug!

6. Now, use the top piece from the cartridge that you are NOT using and cap it onto the bottom of the flash drive case. It may be tricky if the pieces are a little bent.

Tadaaaaa! Now you have your very own film flash drive! Enjoy!
