Six months after the review of my TLR Holga, I revisit with a Tipster to eliminate a strange reflection problem. Read my Tipster to find out the solution to this.
I love the randomness in what we do, but once in a while a problem arises that isn’t random and doesn’t give me the flexibility I want.
In this review, I wrote about a problem that looked like a light leak, but was specifically shaped in a curve and wasn’t as random. My initial suspicions turned out to be true and what I was getting was a reflection of the colour of the interior barrel of my Holga, manifesting itself in the manner shown below.
The cure is a lens hood. It would stop light from bouncing around that red barrel interior into the lens and onto the film. But without an official adaptor or screwthread in the lens, there is no easy way to fit a hood.
First, I looked into the Holga lens hood. The laserjet print out looked awful to me, and fell off during shooting. So I left it for a while and neglected my Holga.
I started shooting black and white more and more towards the end of last year, and at this point I wanted to attach filters to my camera (watch my ongoing Back to Basics series for more info about why, coming soon), the most common sized filters I have are 49mm, from my old Praktica.
I decided I wanted to add a screwthread to my Holga to take these filters, and so, I purchased a step up ring, from 46mm to 49mm. These are easily obtained online or from your local camera shop. This, with a bit of effort screws nicely into the front of your Holga. It makes a mess of the cosmetics, and is never coming off – so beware if you care about the look.
That’s when it struck me. The solution to my problem. Again easily obtainable are rubber, multi-position lens hoods. You can get them at most thread sizes, so I purchased one (very cheaply).
Problem sorted. I present to you, the HOLGAHOOD PRO.
I’d like to say I stopped there, but once you’ve added the step up ring, your lenscap no longer fits, but guess what, easily obtainable online.

I bought a ring online that tightens with 3 little screws onto the Holga's outer lens and then has 52mm filter threads. Worked out great since that is what I had from my Canon's cache. I had never needed the hood, but that is a brilliant idea. I have a Holga GFN that leaks like a sieve when I use its own flash. I wish I could cure that. I live with it so far because I like the lens in it too much to try another unit. You are the Tip Master :)
