Over The Top: Asking to Take People's Picture

Still finding it hard to ask people if you can take their portrait? Let me tell you how to find people who *want* to be asked.

If you look through my albums you’ll find very few portraits of people other than my family, this is because I find it hard to ask people if they mind me shooting them. I’m finding it easier now, and I’ve discovered the reason.

As a family man, I end up going to lots of events to entertain my children. These events often have people in costume, as entertainment. These people normally have an ‘exhibitionist’ streak (in the best possible sense) and they always want to have their photo taken.

When I discovered this, I found myself asking them, and each time it became easier. Next time I’m out on the street and see a stranger I want to shoot, it won’t be nearly as hard to ask.

This person was fascinated by my Lubitel at Glenbrook Village Railway. He had no problem posing for me when I asked.

@jennysparkle and I were talking about this earlier! I need to be braver!

You make a good point. I am painfully shy sometimes so I find it difficult to ask permission.

There have been so many people I would love to take a photo of that have passed me by. I wish I was more brave!

Yeah I think this is pretty accurate. I'm lucky that I live in such a weird place and it seems like everyone wants to get their photo taken.
