Mixing Words With Reality

Some time ago, I read an article of cohetesnaranjas about a failed experiment of mixing words with landscape. I thought it was a wonderful idea so I kept it in my mind so that I could try it someday, maybe with something more.

This is easy to do. First of all we have to think of the words or phrases that we would like to show in our lomos. I chose different phrases about thinks I like, and also some of the lomographic prophecies.

Once we have selected our phrases, we must do a slideshow with a black background and 37 pages (one for each picture). I used different colors, fonts, positions and typography. I thought this way would be funnier and every picture will be different. The most important thing is a big typography, because we can read better and don’t have to get as close to the screen with the camera .

Then photograph the pages of the slideshow on the computer screen. It is important that the lights are off, and don’t use the camera flash. Take a photo using a tripod so that you can take a picture using long exposure. I used an automatic camera with a meter exposure, so I couldn’t calculate the exposure time. But I’m sure it’s about several seconds, depends on the camera and the film used.

Once you have exposed the whole film, rewind it and reload it again in the camera. The black background is perfect to do double exposure. An important thing is do a mark in the sprocket, so when you do the second exposure it will be in the same frame. I forget it when did the second exposure, but I did it with a similar camera and remembered (more or less) the position of the sprocket. I was lucky and the result was good, but if I don’t do that, maybe some words will be cut.

With the film reloaded in the camera I used again it. I didn’t think about a theme. I took pictures of my home, the dawn skies before go to work, mixing the words with the reality of a week of my life. I even did a double exposure with the film. It was funny!

That’s the entire process! It’s a simple tip and the results could be very good!

But, that way won't the photos come out over exposed because of the brightness of the screen?

I suppose the results would vary depending on the type of screen you're using. Definitely field testing this.
