How to Load Your Film to Do Double Exposures

39

I love to do double exposures with my Lomo friends in and out of the country. I love to see different cultures, the cities and life in general in one frame of a picture. But apart from mark the film to do successful double exposures, there is an easier method.

How to Prepare and Load Your Film

Step 1: Before you load the film, make sure you fold your film's sprocket holes. I usually fold up to the second or third sprocket holes of the film.
Step 2: Load your film as usual. Make sure the sprocket holes are inserted correctly into the spool.
Step 3: Close your cover camera and shoot as usual.
Step 4: Send the film to your friend and tell them to use the same method as you are.

Steps 1, 2, 3, 4

And voila, you are done!

Double Exposure Examples

Here's a little gallery to take inspiration from, curated with double exposures from i_am_four-eyes, adi_totp, and warning:

Thanks and Lomo On, never off!

Good idea... assuming your partner's got the same type of take-up spool as you. I use Feds and Zorkis almost exclusively for 35mm, and this would be useless on those, so you might want to mark the first frame anyway. Just a thought.

I always load on the 2nd sprocket - but I never fold. Definitely a good idea to have a consistent system.

hey guys, can someone explain me this tipster? sorry, my fault... but i don't understand why you have to fold the film and how you can load it then. anyway, i love double exposures and the pics here are great! :) thanks everyone!

@ariannapaloma you have to fold it as a mark which sprocket hole that you use, also when you fold it the film will be more tight and secure

and these are some link how to pull out the film from the canister

help! ... i never get 36 shots out of my rolls from my LC-A+ there are always blank parts on the middle of the film... ANYONE KNOW WHY?? :((

  22. ripsta
    ripsta ·

@monkeyalien - maybe your battery is week, change your lca+ battery with a new one

  23. 86john
    86john ·

@monkeyalien there is something wrong with the film advance thingy. it skip films. my LC-W does like that too. I can roll the hole inside the camera while the holding the film advance knob outside the casing still. I am going to claim warranty soon.

  27. ripsta

    @mgeorgiavaldes
yup.it will work and i think it will not harm the camera, give it a try and please tell the result : )
    thanks

Great idea! better than just marking the sprockets. It would definitely work if you're using the same type of camera both times but I'm wondering if you'd still have some sort of misalignment if you use different 35mm camera models. I'm not sure if there's a standard distance between the frame and the take up spool , maybe someone knows? :)

  29. ripsta
    ripsta ·

@hughh - i have try do self double use on lca and lca +,diana f+ 35mm back, colorsplash, and everthing is ok, it will be misalignment when your patner not use the same sprocket hole

This is a wonderful idea, yet so simple. Thanks for sharing it. Sometimes people get blocked, ha!

I loved all three galleries. I have a question: How did you do to get the doubles with adi_totp to get placed one next to the other instead of perfectly overlapped? I liked it so much! Especially the one with the "giant" teddy bear lounging at the pool. That one was genius!!

  31. ripsta
    ripsta ·

@isabelbatteria - we both use splitzer for that double project
    www.lomography.tw/magazine/reviews/2011/06/21/lc-a-plus-spl…
or maybe you can make your own splitzer like this
    www.lomography.tw/magazine/tipster/2009/04/12/tipster-of-th…

  32. isabelbatteria
    isabelbatteria ·

Ohhh, I see!! So you covered, say, the left side all the time and he covered the right side, right? What a magnificent idea!! Thanks! I made my own splitzer cutting half of a lens cap. :)

Can you do doubles/multiple exposures with diana+ 120 film?

  36. ripsta
    ripsta ·

@lisabegush - every diana model camera can make a double exposure, either you use 35 or 120 film, i just try this method on 35 mm camera only, i never try it on 120 film.
