Lost in development...

How to care for film! Film is expensive. Even cheap film, because its takes time, energy and patience to develop film or get it developed. Film images are magical and even more so when they are developed well.

On the other hand, it is certainly disheartening to see badly developed film. The cause for this heartbreak might be expired film, bad storage of film before or after developing or just a very lazy and incompetent film developer. Although results from expired film are not very much in our hands, they might be pleasantly surprising thus reducing the trauma of seeing what you least expected.

Badly stored film? Now that’s another story! If film is not stored in a dark, sufficiently dry and cool place, expect a fungus attack! (Yes, I have learned it the hard way!) Unexposed and exposed film should be kept in the refrigerator unless you want it ruined! As soon as the film is exposed, remove it from the camera and store it back in the plastic canister it came is. And don’t wait for too long to get exposed film developed.

And lastly, if it’s neglect and incompetence on the part of the person who develops your film, there is nothing much you can do apart from demand your money back. Despite that, you are the one who loses. There is nothing you can do to recover that precious film once developed.

Developed film needs no less care. Once developed, store film in archival sleeves. and keep them safe in a dust free, dry and dark place.

Whatever it may be that you like to shoot, everything is better with properly developed film!

Thanks. I really need to reserve a space in my room to store them, properly.
