An easy way to create written text or pictures with light without guessing what it will look like.

Although writing freehand with a flashlight works, it necessitates that you write in cursive, be aware of the size of your letters as well as the spacing. This tipster eliminates the need for the guess work and allows for limitless modifications to suit your needs.

First gather the following items:
1. A box
2. A light strand or battery operated light of some sort
3. Black paper
4. A razor
5. Clear tape
6. Wax paper
7. Reflective paper (optional)

Start off by opening the box on one end and having it taped closed on the other. If you are using a light strand and reflective paper, cut a small slit in the closed side of the box to feed the cord out so it may be plugged in later.

Then tape the reflective paper around the light strands

If you are not using a light strand, but a battery operated light simply line the box and place the light inside. If you aren’t lining the inside either, skip the above steps and place the light in the box.

After the lights and optional steps have been followed, place a sheet of wax paper on the open side of the box. This helps to diffuse the light while the optional reflective paper helps to equally distribute how the light is reflected out of the box.

Now, using the the black paper and the razor, create a stencil that you wish for the light to go through. I am using it to illuminate writing but you may print off stencils or create your own images. The concept is exactly like the one used in a jack-o-lantern.

The last step is to tape the black paper stencil over the wax paper. If you like, you may cover the rest of the spaces above and below the stencil with black paper but it seems easier to just crop the photo.

All that is left to do is to find a dark space and turn it on and click away!

Experiment with the light color to create the desired effect.
