Recycling Spools and Canisters

Always ask for your lab to give you back the film spools and canisters after developing. Just ask them to give it back to you afterwards.

They always end up in the trash bin anyway so they probably will not say no to you. These empty rolls are useful for so many cool things that will make your life easier and with no cost at all!

What are they for? Well, many things:

- If you want to do home-made Redscale, all you need is an empty film roll and a new one. Rewind the inverted film into the new one and that’s it;

- If you buy film in cans, it is important to have empty rolls handy to rewind and keep your stocks up without spending too much;

- Rewind a slide film into a common negative roll to cheat that lab that refuses to do x-pro or charge too much for doing it;

- Rewind a film of a specific ISO to the roll of another film with a different ISO to cheat automatic cameras with DX code reading, in order to push the film, for example;

- Make pinhole cameras with match boxes or any other material;

- Make key-chains with your favorite film roll (but this is already an old trick :) ).

Among other things, your imagination is the limit. And you can use not only empty 135 film rolls, but also 120 ones, too. You can use one of those to substitute the film roll that is inside your Holga, in case you lose it. Very useful.
