Dr. Lab Experiment Three: Lava Lamp

Meet Dr. Lab aka hti. Straight from the HQ Lomography Archive where he has been whipping up some weird and wonderful experiments just for you. Many thanks Dr. Lab for sharing his laboratory experience, secret techniques and analogue passion in the third of his special edition Film Freak Tipsters. Now come on everyone and do the dishwasher!

The examples seen in this effect were done with the holy of holy films the Agfa CT Precisa 100 35mm. The procedure is just the same as “Do the dish-washer however, as you can see, change the film and you can change your results completely!

What You’ll Need

• 1 Roll Agfa CT Precisa 100 35mm.
• 1 Dishwasher Cycle with Detergent (normal)
• 1 Dark Room (try your bathroom)
• 1 Hair-Dryer

Step One:

Put your roll of film into the cutlery basket of your dish-washer, (so as to keep it from flying about) add regular dish-washer detergent and set to a normal cycle.

Once the cycle is finished be sure to rinse the film in clean cold* water afterwards thoroughly

*Cold water is a must! Film has a chemical emulation that needs to be fixed by cooling.

Step Two:

With your rinsed film at the ready you need to find a nice dark room like a washroom with the door closed. Make sure that there are no light leaks because now you need to pull the film out of the roll to blow-dry it. It will take about 10 minutes of blow-drying until the film goes from slimy and wet to perfectly dry and normal feeling again, which is what you need it to be like before loading in your camera.

Step Three:

Load and shoot! Then crocs process as normal and try to contain your excitement while you wait for the results.

As you can see the effects in the case of doing the dish-washer with Agfa CT Precisa 100 35mm are totally different than with Ektachrome creating a very oozy look in which the classic blues of CT Precisa turn green! A look any film freak will be sure to dig! Please do share your results with us if you try this at home!

this is sooo funky! But I need the strength to 'defile' my precious Precisa roll though. Great tie-dyed effect!

This is really cool. Can you explain a bit more in detail? Do I pull the roll of film out afterwards and wash it with cold water?

The thing that I don't really understand is if the film gets "destroyed" when the film is inside the capsule ... Should I pull out the film or not ... Yeah, what ever. Cool effekt, I will go crazy with washing powder!
By the way 'pulex' - maybe you can borrow a washing machine and put in a few rolls in the same time ... more eco-friendly.

do you think the people at CVS (or any drug store) would get pissed by doing this? I have a little competition with a friend on who can make a more trippyer picture.

I was telling my lab what i did to the film and they got hold of the head office to ask if it will mess with their chemicals and rollers and stuff. Head office said they should ban me! and that it will mess with their equipment.... is there anything i can tell them that will put their mind at ease cos i really like the effect?

yes, I have the same type of question... what will this do to the chemicals in a normal C-41 processing machine??? will it do anything to the rolls of film put in after the dishwasher roll goes through?
